an ongoing story is that Change, the payment processor for UnitedHealth that processes half the payments in the industry got hit by a ransomware attack. this means that loads of healthcare providers across the country (including my spouse, we'll be ok) are just not getting paid for the work they do!
that sucks, but here's where it gets evil: not paying providers means UnitedHealth is sitting on a giant pile of money (hundreds of millions of dollars a day), which they're using to buy practices that are in danger of closing because they're not getting paid by UnitedHealth.
on top of that, it's likely a lot of work will go unpaid and it'll get blamed on being missed after the attack or lack of prior authorization etc, etc. just deeply broken that this giant company can massively fuck up and then massively profit from the fallout of their failure
single payer now, etc, etc
