I've done some cage printing, actually. There's a few problems, but mainly in finding a good model. If you're a good 3D designer, you can probably do it, but getting the sizing just right is a pain. You also need to be able to sand the shit out of the prints because half of mine failed from not having internal supports. You've also gotta be really picky with your material; I used resin(SLA printing) and they end up being super delicate/brittle. I would think FDM(melted plastic) printing might be better since you can pick a more durable material to print with.
ohhhhhh thanks for the info! im gonna edit the reply to point towards this comment :)
yea no worries! It took maybe 8 prints before I got something wearable. A big problem with it is re-sizing, since if you just try to scale up or down, your lock won't fit anymore.
If you're decently good with blender or some other 3d modeling, it could be a bit easier to design your own, but you're still limited by the materials, and you'll really need to test a bunch of different things for printability, fit and comfort.
im not really a 3d printing enthusiast, but thats cool to know. i used locked in lust cages for a bit, but those even being solid mold plastic broke overtime with regular use. the last year or so i've been using a flathead metal cage and it's been really nice. i just wish there was like, yeah more variety in this yknow.
