The main instance of Misskey, the japanese Mastodon-like site where most of the jp artists seem to be moving to, finally lifted the invite only rule, so I made an account. It's a fun place, much more lively than what I've seen from Mastodon, and it has amazing features like "mark your account as a cat" that gives your avatar cat ears and makes you talk with nya and custom stickers. There's no likes so you can only react with stickers like in Discord, and posts become beautiful things like this:

I myself got a pretty warm welcome, but I noticed some other people who joined later on the day all got the レッターパックで現金を送れ sticker on their first messages, which means send cash by letterpack. I got pretty curious so I decided to look into it.
Apparently this is a reference to a common scam, because sending money by post is illegal in Japan, and people used the meme when they think whatever's being posted is suspicious or paranoid.
But in the current context it seems to be a running gag because the exodus from Twitter is making the server bills grow exponentially and the devs have started to ask for donations, which sounded funny for the userbase that already had used that sticker as a joke, so now it's used as a welcome sticker for people coming from Twitter. I think? lol I'll choose to believe it's a funny welcome rather than bullying

They seem to have a good culture of people supporting via patreon/fanbox so I think they'll be fine. Maybe the constant requests of cash via letterpack will convince more people to donate haha
