my guess is that they independently confirmed the claims by his sister that he abused her (CW: Sexual assault, abuse, child abuse, suicidal ideation, severe mental illnesses/trauma, graphic (sexual) langauge): https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/QDczBduZorG4dxZiW/sam-altman-s-sister-annie-altman-claims-sam-has-severely
to quote hrtfrg again:
yeah, but that's been out since 2021 + mounting evidence proving it, if they were going to fire him for that it wouldn't have been so sudden. their blog post is also worded like. incredibly yikes
and i have to agree, it just doesnt make sense
there is also a theory floating around that a massive data breach has happened behind the scenes, but who knows lol
oh i don't think i processed it first came out 2 years ago, the first i heard was back in october. having worked with boards at several big companies, i think people would be surprised by how often things like this can not actually make it to the board. i'm not saying it's the case here, but having it build over 2 years while the company is doing well and then a recent re-hashing of the issue (with new events/context) actually spiking the concern of the board is not totally unheard of. i mean take theranos or any number of charismatic CEOs who kept their investors and boards in the dark. like it was even open knowledge in the effective altruism community that SBF made extremely bad/risky decisions since 2018 when most of alameda research left.
at the same time, i don't think the reason would just be that, rather the board was worried that whatever the new thing was would react really poorly with it. like it took that previous thing and would make damage control nigh impossible and would cause enough issues with investors to risk this recent deal.
that or their cost to performance is way off.
i saw a tweet that was like "we would know if we still had valleywag" which feels very true
