art discourse is fascinating as an outsider to the art world because like, it seems like it’s absolutely essential for people in the arts. like if you're a curator or whatever, you need to know how to place, idk, that technically innovative interactive typographic installation, into the same brochure as like a woman from a hundred years ago who flourished making amazing art in her 60s because her husband died and she was free to do what she wanted.
but to do so and still describe its significance u have to like make it sound like a bunch of academic bullshit. so most people outside of the arts HATE it. (and i'm sure a lot of people in it too.)
i'm watching this talk where this artist describes a project that constructs a narrative world where a cyberwitch explores digital space and connection. when i look at the screenshot above, part of me is like “socio-political entanglements get the FUCK out of here” and another part is like "still this is a really good project" and now there's this new part of me that's like "ahh yess good job asking great questions about the nature of our entanglement with technology in relation to consumption good points good points"
ps i just learned the academic buzzword "hyperbodies", only to discover within seconds of searching that the term has absolutely been co-opted by web3 vultures... the relationship between the cryptocurrency world and the art world has been absolutely fascinating to watch even before NFTs were a thing
