halsin critical thoughts 🫣

halsin is great, but (to me) he is nearly as amorphous and interchangeable as random durge/tav's. his characterization in canon and fanon is all over the place and its hard for me to connect with him and understand his relationship to other characters. halstarion is one of the biggest ships in the fandom, but?? i see it as a glorified druid!tav x astarion essentially lol 😭

but he's a sweet elf dilf and everyone loves a good size difference, so who am i to judge. just understand that i am 100% sharing halsin art/fics the way i would of other people's durge/tavs woops

honestly i kind of agree-- i think it's because initially he wasn't romanceable so he was an alright developed character as a side companion but once romance was added in at fan request he became a little more nebulous and meant almost as a wish fulfillment sex druid instead of like. a plot beat character for act 2

YES the whole "going from plot npc to romanceable companion" is a messy can of worms that made him a weaker character. he's the bg3 "10 lbs in a 5 lb bag" character with all his archdruid, sex slave, shadow-curse stuff

(entering the halsin critical discussion with a jumpscare halsin icon:) Yeah, I fully agree. I write Halsin/Astarion, and Halsin is probably my favorite bg3 character. I personally don't mind the vague characterization, because I am a vibes-based fan and I love it when fandom takes a random npc with 3 lines and runs off with them to some wild direction.
So. Reading what you wrote, I probaly like Halsin in part because of the way he's written. I have my preferred version of him in my head.
In contrast, Astarion's character has a lot more effot put into the writing (imo), so with him I'm constantly thinking "Hmm. Interesting, but I'm just going to ignore all that :)" And on the other other hand, since Astarion has so much going on, I find it fun to just bounce him off Halsin, who can be whatever the story needs.

So yeah, tldr: I agree, and don't mind! Big druid hot. 🫡

bahaha i mean, my halsin critical thoughts are probably about as mild as they come because i do think he's great ehe. i love big hairy sweet smart dudes, what's not to love? he just gives off oc vibes moreso than canon larian character vibes, if that makes sense. and it does rub off on how i interact with works he's in. astarion's writing in comparison has an excess of care, its wild. i respectfully ignore bits and pieces of astarion's canon depending on the work, but ignore halsin's canon whole cloth sometimes woops

honestly I agree! I 100% do not hate the guy but he feels like he really COULD just have stayed an NPC to me hahaha he's nice and sweet and all but I don't see the appeal in romancing him, personally, it feels incomplete and a bit pointless hahaha

YES!!!!! you hit the nail on the head for me. i feel kinda bad for people who dropped an origin romance to get monogamous with halsin. incomplete and pointless 100%

i love love love fix it or au stuff where npc's get some romance, and i wonder if halsin would have been better off that way 😭 bc for me, characters like rolan somehow have more oomf to their characterization and that's so weird considering halsin's expanded role in the final version of the game...
