I have no doubt, yeah. I think it was clear then it was a case of writers doing the best they could with the mandate they had, and just ultimately a kind of problematic, if well-meaning hedge from above. This more recent case with the IGN review is weirder (especially coming almost a decade later, yikes) in how confidently dismissive the sidebar is of the whole endeavor, like—"you might be wondering where the cultural critique is in this review: here's where we tell you that's not what reviews are for." like what

If I remember correctly, Polygon reviews in 2013/2014 had a REPUTATION for being… god, I feel ancient, but social justice warrior-y partially because they hired a massive queer (me) to be on the team, and the social Justice (aka cultural context) sidebar was a thing we practically joked about. It was a wild time. God. Today’s discourse (such that it is) damn near killed me.
