I can agree with the "trying to justify it makes it less furry" argument, but I can also see the counterargument of "the creator really wanted animal people in their project and went out of their way to find some justification."
Counter counter-point, if the creator is uncomfortable enough with adding animal people even if they really wanted to add them, that's still going to come through in the final media and make it harder to attach to the talking animals.
My point was trying to emphasize that if you say have little mice and they have little doors to their houses in the walls. Does the media just show that or does it take the time to be like "this is little mouseville where all the little mice live and they live here because..."
