never fails to annoy the crap out of me when subtitles are inaccurate in a movie. i got so mad about it with Darkplace that I made a whole set of more accurate subtitles for it but let's be honest that's not feasible as a single person whenever i'm watching an 80s movie where the dialogue says "I want to go to the store and pick up a carton of milk and some eggs" and the subtitles are saying "I want to go to the shop".

I know why it happens, theoretically (subtitles of that era often worked off of scripts, not the actual movie) but it's so truly insane to me that that was (and is! still! sometimes!) considered "adequate subtitling". It should be criminalized

and i don't even have a hearing disability here -- I just don't trust my own ears sometimes and i like to have reading material as backup! I can't even imagine how infuriating this would be if i really couldn't catch the dialogue! christ!!

Same, I usually watch stuff with subtitles given the option (most of my family is annoyed by this lmao) and it's really distracting when they don't match. One of the many reasons I love physical media over streaming is that blu-rays usually have very very good subtitles compared to streaming services.

I have an auditory processing disorder and I use subtitles every chance I get. I watch YouTube a lot and my biggest pet peeve is when the subtitles are different to what's being said.... even with big channels!! Like if you're taking the time to make subtitles at least make them accurate, don't fiddle around with your script at this stage PLEASE!!!! 😭😭

When I was watching The Dumping Ground with a friend on the BBC's vod website. The subtitles were like proper television cc where different peoples dialogue was in diff colors, nice!

Not nice? There is a very main character named May-Li Wang. It would commonly get mis-titled as 'Mei-ling' or any other kind of phoneme mash it was infuriating. But then I was given the context of depending on the show on the BBC a lot of the subtitling is outsourcing, unpaid labor so :)
