i feel like academia is the only sphere that takes plagiarism deadly serious and we gotta take that route at some point.
it’s tough because even if the world was perfect and money wasn’t a factor people would still be ripping work off just for the social benefits. a lot of the current discourse kinda has to focus on money as a reason that anyone should care about art theft which is understandable but like… without the money as measurement, how would we identify the harm done by art theft and what value does credit occupy in a purely social context detached from survival? idk if I would care any less about my shit getting jacked if money disappeared tomorrow but I also strongly believe that I can’t control how my work influences others and that’s a good thing. I don’t want someone to take my work outright and display it as their own but I also don’t want to, like, enforce that. idk how effectively I communicated this but TL;DR, i’m really conflicted about the whole idea of intellectual property even without capitalism, but that kinda doesn’t even matter until the current material reality is resolved in some way. shit sucks.
yea no you're totally right!! the most important thing i care about with my art is the potential joy it brings people, rather than the money it might rake in. but capitalism or not it will get buried under content that other people have hastily stolen without including any context or providing their audience with the information about the original creator, whose other works may have resonated with said audience, but they will never even see. it will keep happening this way until the original artist is pushed out of their space to the point where they can no longer provide anything for anyone. i would never recommend a 4 hour video to someone for obvious reasons but hbomb went over this kind of thing really eloquently as well.
