i wrote a new song and noah gave me a lot of praise for it saying it actually had chord progressions. so for context i never learned how to music properly, never learned the "supposed to"s or any theory stuff. they asked me if i wanted to know what i did "right" and i said no absolutely not fuck you. because heres the thing i love love love not knowing anything about music it gives me so much freedom to make anything i want without feeling like i did something "wrong." i HIGHLY recommend making art if you don't know anything about it. it's like lucid dreaming where you're just like oh shit i can do anything now? and then you take off flying

this is NOT to shit on people who have learned the ropes and use that knowledge to make stuff that is completely valid too obviously. it definitely gives you a leg up if you get stuck trying to make something i think, and im sure a lot of skills that bring your art to a level i don't even understand. that's beautiful too. i just want to encourage the act of making shit in general

This is one reason I sometimes mess around with alternative tunings on my guitar - once my fingers don't know the shapes of any chords it's much easier to find the kind of interesting stuff my conventional ears don't seek out in regular tuning.
