speaking of getting annoyed at a term from both ends: Open source journalism/open source intelligence
I get annoyed at the way this software term has been borrowed. From one direction, from respecting the original usage, it doesn’t fit. Open source just not just mean out there and free to use for whatever, in fact open source is a set of restrictions on what you can do with software. Open source licences are meant to oblige you to distribute your software in certain ways and make you republish everything you use under those same terms.
From the other direction: The software industry is incredibly shit and should not be held up the way it in society. People borrow terms from software to sound cool and cutting edge instead of throwing them in the bin like they should. Open source is a libertarian idealogy with massive problems that still enables enclosure and exploitation of communal efforts by massive corporations. It is not worth copying.
