  • they might be giants scanning their first music video (shot on film) at 4k resolution, and then not releasing it for some reason
  • men at work music videos never being scanned at a higher quality than a somewhat crappy 2003 DVD release with bad telecine flicker and bitrate issues throughout (many were also shot on film)
  • thousands, hundreds of thousands of videotapes from lots and lots of bands from the 70s and 80s being thrown away or left to rot. their official music videos, television performances, etc
  • warner brothers only releasing the awesome 1981 concert film Urgh! A Music War on a made-to-order DVD-R and never on blu-ray or streaming or ANYTHING else
  • poor quality upscales (many times using "AI") of 80s/90s music videos replacing youtube copies

is saying "we are destroying our history" too dramatic? idk. im mad.

edit: and don't get me started on born-digital youtube stuff disappearing, or videogames, or stuff being unilaterally replaced with worse versions and nobody caring to preserve the original

I grew up at a time when experts constantly decried the loss of older written works, with most of what we know more than a couple of centuries ago coming to us through a series of helpful accidents. We think of the survivors as important examples, but we mostly have no idea what people liked. And then we've spent the time since utterly refusing to learn anything from that lesson...
