Oh I just realised the the book I’m using defines y as the vertical axis but in SRB2 z is the vertical axis

Oh! That wan’t the problem at all! The way they book defined the axes didn’t conflict with they way I did it at all (I wrote all this code months ago and was coming back to it with hazy recollections). I literally just did the quaternion multiplication wrong for the step where I was accounting for the camera rotation.

I’m doing some mod development for Sonic Robo Blast 2. It lets you change characters’ colours for multiplayer games. A side effect of the want I’m launching the game for testing is setting the Knuckles to use the default colour scheme instead of his correct one.

The purely quaternion stuff that is handling rotations is working fine actually the weird thing I am trying and failing to do is to translate the quaternion representations backs into Euler angles and then use those to try and figure out the animation state for the character sprite from it using an insane spreadsheet I was making.
