tips, hmm....
i'd say 90% of the Look of my mocs is from using tons of curved slopes.
speed champions is your friend! turn a car into a guy. it's cool

getting to know how brackets and those sorts of pieces fit together is another one: the way the head is constructed for this one uses several brackets to add some studs facing out the back and kind of clamp everything together.

for character figures, i am always thinking about the "skeleton" and orientation of ball/socket joints to get the right range of motion. swapping a ball with a socket can significantly change the mobility of a joint, depending on where it is.

i also keep all my lego sorted by colour (rather than part shapes or sizes) but that's less of a building choice other than making it easier to work with limited colour palettes.
