also:

namely: how to show that a button has focus when it has no text in it
for normal buttons i'm using text colour because it's the least "intrusive" and means that buttons that can't be focused for whatever reason don't look too visibly different from ones that can when pressed (because there's no "pressed when focused" style option so the focus style mostly overrides the pressed one).

BUT
for the left-right item switching buttons, that falls apart because they are made of nothing but the outer shape...

currently i'm kind of thinking i'll make them just fill entirely with the focus colour (medium blue) which does kind of set them apart from other buttons but without a more in-depth redesign it seems like the best option.
