welcome to my livejournal.

Well, let’s make the most of it and appreciate the world around.

It is gorgeous outside today, clear blue skies with only the barest brush stroke of clouds for accents. Sunny and warm, with enough of a breeze to dry the sweat on the back of your neck. The sort of perfect summer day that can only be conjured by banishing the children back to school after a washed-out holiday. (Or at least, those children unfortunate enough to not have been suddenly informed that their school was built out of artificial fucking pumice.)

There are worse conditions to be on a train in. The views today are stunning. The trees and fields show off the full depth of their greens and golds in the light. You can pick out the individual houses on the other side of the river, and every crag on the islands off the coast. From the elevation of the bridge, every boat on the sparkling estuary seems like an impossibly detailed miniature. I’ve travelled this route many times, and familiarity does not lessen its beauty.

The patchwork fields, the hillside towns and the shimmering seascapes all framed by the window – this is what I want to capture in textiles, in silk and linen and wool, in embroidery thread and beads. Not just the shape and colour, but the texture of the view.

Alas, sitting on a train with no openable windows means the missing out on the peaceful afternoon air. Simply sitting and relaxing by an open window is one of my favourite Sunday afternoon activities, and I put off cleaning the bathroom yesterday until the sun had gone down to make the most of it. Our flat is bitterly cold in the winter, and winter lasts for a long time, so really it is prudent to make the most of the warm air while we have it.
