Service games are a weird thing to put in a media thread because they change month to month, and in a game as character-focused as a character action-based gacha game, even a single character's release can dramatically change the experience for a player.
That was the case for me and lucking into Zhu Yuan, the cutie rookie cop character. I wasn't feeling most of the free-to-play characters, and netting Nekomata as my first S-rank (the SSR equivalent) didn't really help. But Zhu Yuan's complex, but basic attack-focused hybrid playstyle was pretty unique (at least compared to the other characters I had), and made me want to master it like I was discovering Vergil for the first time in a Devil May Cry game.
I'm a pretty lazy gacha player. You would have to threaten me at gunpoint to make me really give my all to mastering an FGO challenge quest or running Contingency Contract in Arknights, but ZZZ (with my Zhu Yuan/Anby/Nicole trio) made me wanna be a tryhard that maxes out my Shiyu Defense returns and take on the 99-floor dungeon.
That's also the funny thing, because the meta and traditional tier list approach to character-collector gachas is particularly useless in ZZZ's case because of how essential it is that you try to find a character you like playing with. In some ways this is great, especially if you like some of the F2P characters. In other ways, this can suck, because I had to score the limited SSR new girl to "find the fun." What if someone comes in late and would've liked their own Zhu Yuan?
This is also on top of the usual engagement-boosting tactics common to gachas, like dailies, weeklies, and randomized stat grind, though hoyo has wisely toned it down compared to Honkai Star Rail and Genshin because the core gameplay loop is fairly high-overhead by itself (something I wish Bungie had recognized better for Destiny 2 when deciding how much of a 2nd job the game has to be to still feel nice to play).
That problem may eventually get solved by eventually filling out the roster so more characters get equivalents, but at least at this early stage, I highly encourage looking through the demos and trial stages to find someone you like playing with.
