in reply to @swordbroken's post:

Yeah, I have seen the Chess++ posts! I like your "mushroom" and "fury" pieces a lot. That kind of contrast between move and capture, sort of extrapolating the logic of the pawn's smaller/purer example, is something I think chess variants tend to underutilize.

I have not managed to dig into the whole set much, because I'm not very good at reading the notes and can't figure out how to make fairyground.vercel.app work right. Can you think of anything I might likely be missing? I have done as you describe in the linked post, but I'm not seeing any way to change the pieces (pasting in start FEN says "invalid" and under Board Setup only the standard chess pieces are listed).

sorry! i forgot the new UI for fairyground is more obtuse than before for selecting the variant. next to "Variant Type" where it says "Name" all the variants that it's currently aware of should be defined. you have to select one of these in order to be able to use and play with the pieces that chess++ defines. i'll clarify that in my post in more detail in a bit

importantly: it's aware of many variants (found in the Name drop down menu) by default, not just the ones i defined; therefore the names i gave (chess++, ortho, unicorn, sliders, leapers, power, mini-power, hybrid, ultrachess) will be mixed with many other variants; in retrospect maybe i should prefix them all with something so that they appear in the same section... maybe chess++-[name]?

EDIT: ok original post should be updated now
