Anyone know of examples of recorded "immortal" or great games of chess played in variant formats? I welcome any variant. What I'm looking for could be:

  • Brilliancies or master-like play utilizing variant pieces/rules
  • Recorded games (notation or even just video content) that showcase the central features of a particular variant in especially illuminating or exciting ways
  • Recorded games where new techniques arise that were not written directly into the variant rules, similar to a windmill, poisoned pawn, staircase, etc.

...something like that.

I posted this question to the chess.com forums, but I am not expecting much. The variants forum category there seems like kind of a hellscape, as does the whole forum—or the whole website as a corporate entity cough cough. Anyway, the search terms available to this subject have given me no results when searching around. Maybe I should remember that libraries exist.

Over the past 24 hours I scrunched down a much shorter version of my gigantic website about Veney, hopefully slightly more approachable—about 8,500 words instead of the original 22,000.

It's here: short.veney.xyz

One of the main reactions I got from the initial release of the game was "wow, that's a lot." So, I'm hoping this one has less capacity to shock and dismay. Still planning on attending the tabletop game designers meet up at MFF tomorrow! I wonder if anyone there likes swords.

My promise to you: I will not attempt to swindle anyone out of their various tabletop trinkets and baubles, even though that is a core component my game.

I think I will be bringing myself and all my veney stuff to the 🔥Tabletop Game Designers Meet Up🔥 at Midwest FurFest this Saturday at 11am to proselytize chense and to check out everyone's contraptions, doohickies, brain ideas, paper lasers, math dice and what have you.

Veney! It's sword chess! It rhymes with "bidet!" ⚔️veney.xyz⚔️ for the whole spiel — a shorter version of the site/rules is forthcoming, hopefully in time for Saturday.

You can find me wearing the above image of a deranged cat guy (accidental fursona) who is unrelated to the game and would absolutely drop any sword entrusted to him into a pond.
