it's obviously coming from a place of genuine interest with medieval daily life as well as the life of the mind. the debt to the name of the rose is clear but that's the opposite of a bad thing; a benedictine monastery in germany in the days of luther is a space so rich with meaning and metaphor that it's almost irresistible. i'm not far in at all but i'm excited to see where it goes
Pentiment is so earnest about depicting what life was actually like to the best of its ability, it's such a breath of fresh air. Especially when it comes to the centrality of religion to the setting. Characters run the gamut of piety but everyone treats religion seriously and non-anachronistically. The opposite of something like... remember the Ridley Scott Kingdom of Heaven film where Saladin is some kind of middle of the road sceptic straight out of a 90s university debate club, it felt so fake. Pentiment is nothing like that
