several experiments in one:
-
continuing my zorn palette adventures, since Ulti has a lot of blue in her design I decided to introduce ultramarine into the mix (if you've seen the zorn palette obv there is no blue there at all and while it'd probably be fine mixing cool grays like in my previous zorn palette pieces I wanted to see if I can " scale" it with one additional colour.
-
inspired by the zorn palette in general and the portable painter micro, experimenting with paring down my setup in other regards: i set out to finish this a single ~8mm wide filbert brush, but about 80% in I abandoned that idea and brought in a ~5mm flat for detail areas and a rigger for linework. I think the filbert would be enough if I was doing landscapes and at a slightly larger format (this one is about 13x13cm), but for a "portrait" like this I end up wanting the detail. I'm always thinking that my painting pouch is both slightly too large and exactly the size it needs to be - in a pinch I could probably just do two brushes and nothing else, but that's where I run into my other problem which a former art teacher described as being a "item fetishist".
anyway, pretty happy with this! I haven't painted anything since I got back from the PNW... I wish I painted more there, but I think I'm always wishing that, since I did actually paint a good amount there, considering my schedule.
