as i get older i think the wrongest "common saying" with the most unintentional but harmful consequences was the old grognard phrase¹ "the internet never forgets". as it turns out it was insanely easy for the internet to forget things when the data centers started getting centralized (for convenience) and then decommissioned (for cost-saving reasons)
