@kuraine made a nice post about one of her favorite series, Escaflowne, talking about the changes Fox Kids made when they imported it for American television. She specifically highlighted composer Inon Zur's uncomfortable excuse for rescoring the series, namely that what appeals musically to Western audiences differs greatly from that of Japanese audiences. There are more legitimate reasons for why a particular series might have its music replaced during localization, whether it's due to irreconcilable international rights issues or if the original score/sfx/voice audio separations for a series no longer exist.

And sometimes it went the other way, as it did when TV Tokyo brought X-MEN: The Animated Series over to Japan in the mid '90s. You may already know they replaced the opening and ending themes with songs from J-rock band Ambience (flashing warning) -- the lyric "Cry for the moon" from the OP "RISING" seems to make the meme rounds every couple years -- but they also used some of Ambience's music for scenes during the episodes, too. Teichiku Records put out a soundtrack album for it in late 1994, where this track comes from. It also came with this nice, big Jubilee sticker.
