posting thoughts that i think in my brain

I'm honestly not really sure where to migrate post co-host. I had big dreams of posting more consistently over here and yet I fell into my lurking habits again. I haven't used any other social media site since leaving twitter so I feel a bit lost. What's the difference between mastodon and blue sky? Everything feels like a bit pot of internet soup and I don't know what I'm looking for .

in reply to @tallywinkle's post:

As someone who enjoys posting on both but also has criticisms of both, I guess the difference is that mastodon is federated, which means there's servers that someone registers on before posting and interacting with others. Bluesky is supposed to do this at some point too. The pro for this is that if one server goes down, it doesn't take everything down, but the con it does make it more complicated to use.

Again, I like posting on both and would recommend trying both but I also understand that is also more time consuming

I appreciate the reply and will probably give it a try! I'm also curious about your posts about RSS feeds and blogs as that also seems cool but I'm overwhelmed at the idea of making my own blog 😅.. add it to the list of possibilities though!

Mastodon is server-first, while Bluesky is user-first. So in Mastodon, when you make an account it lives on whatever server you choose and if you ever want to leave, you have to export your data and import it into the new server. Each server lives and dies by its operator and how they choose to moderate content on their server.

Bluesky operates on a protocol that basically has it such that every user has a data server containing their posts, likes, etc. A relay server scours the web for compliant data servers and outputs a firehose of posts that are read by apps which decide what to display, with intermediate steps for labeling (moderating) content. Other clients could also use the protocol and read the relay firehose but this is still nascent.

These technical differences lead to culture differences as a result but I haven't spent much time on Mastodon to really compare- I like Bluesky, it feels like a smaller Twitter, but being smaller, it might take time to cultivate your space in it. Same goes for Mastodon of course.
