Cat of many shapes. Usually fat.

As old as the Web.

I am going to ramble about so much garbage.

Some of it will be mechanical, some of it electronic, some of it will be software, and most of it will be of little interest to anyone; but here it is all the same.

LED conversion go!

Fully stripped the panel and fitted lengths of 12v warm-white LED tape around the inside of the cluster, and it worked out quite nicely. Originally there was a light-pipe that shone a little bit of light down over the front of the gauges, just enough to illuminate the needles; but now I've repainted the faded needles with flourescent paint, I'm considering downlighting it with a little bit of UV just to make them stand out without the source of the light being too obvious.

Also, because I never manage to put these things back together without fucking something up, the speedo now overreads by 10mph, and there's a funny clicking coming from the region of the mechanism. So that's something else I've got to fix next time I'm in there. :)

Sunday's great success: finally got diagnostics out of my car!

It only took:

  • Rewiring the diagnostic port to use the modern OBD2 connector
  • Adding a new ground wire because the one off the original diagnostic connector was bad. Somehow.
  • Getting a copy of the VW specific diag software and and adapter
  • Doing a 2am install of Windows 7 on my laptop, so I could use the diag software

And this let me discover:

  • The brand new coolant temperature sensor I installed on Saturday is bad. Totally open circuit.
