It took a little bouncing around, but I’ve finally settled on my next game to fill that Xenoblade 3-shaped void—Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Seeing that new FE announced reminded me that I played like 20 hours of Three Houses in 2019 and then set it down to deal with moving apartments… and just never got back to it. Whoops!

My first attempt was playing on Normal/Casual and I’d sided with the Black Eagle. Instead of picking up that save, I decided to start a new file with permadeath and went with Golden Deer. I’m feeling really good about both of those decisions! The Divine Pulse is a great way to make permadeath feel a little less punishing but still maintain that tension. I haven’t lost anyone yet, but there have been some nail-biters.

And I like the Golden Deer crew so much more than Black Eagle!!! I don’t hate Black Eagle but the vibes are so much better with Claude & Co. and I’m excited to get to know them more.

I caught up with my previous file today, and I’m very excited for whatever lies ahead!

....like a week ago, after basically playing it like it was my job for a couple weeks. (i am employed now, thank god)

It's really good, and if you're concerned about playing it without playing one or both previous entries.... don't worry about it! I kinda think they did the game no favors by slappin' that 3 on there. I mean, it's definitely connected to them, but the actual plot of the game is still compelling even if you haven't played 1 and 2. I personally had only played XBC 1 before, and had no issue following along. And anyone who would say you have to play 100-200 hours of JRPG to play this one is waaaay out of pocket... or in high school.

Great cast, good anime melodrama, great side quests, fun combat, INCREDIBLE music, slick job system. I would die for Eunie.

kinda thinking this will end up being a "what i'm playing" blog. 2022 is the year i got over the stigma and decided i'm a JRPG guy, so i'm making up for years of ignoring the genre (with a few exceptions... i'm not very internally consistent). so expect some of that.

currently playing... final fantasy x remaster, for the first time. i like it a lot, and i'm mad at myself for ignoring it for 20 years. foolishly, i didn't realize it wasn't an ATB final fantasy game until a couple years ago. why can't they all be like this?
