i feel like defenses of BOTW's weapon durability system sometimes boil down to "the game wouldn't work without it" which is true! But it's true in a way that doesn't tell us anything about the game or the mechanic. This is true of any mechanic that's central enough of the game. This is a statement about how the game is structured, not about the mechanic. The fact that a mechanic is central doesn't tell you anything about how good or fun it is. It's just a description, similar to saying "that's just how the world is" when pointing out a deficiency of the world. The point is it doesn't have to be that way.

Note that I am talking about the ways we discuss this, not necessarily the merit of the specific claims about the durability system. Personally, I find that my problem with the loot system is that the durability of the weapons is too low and the other loot we get from the enemies is not very interesting, but I still have many hours in BOTW. I think it's brought up so often because it's the part that feels the least good most often in what's otherwise a sublime game.

in reply to @tati's post:

i played so much botw and at best the weapon system was something that did not get in my way. at worst it was a chore because i would use up my weapons while forgetting to collect more because stocking my sword pantry was not something i was interested in doing

the master sword kind of just sucks, too. the duct tape spell in the new one seems like an interesting or at least funny way to prevent this being an issue for me though

i agree, they did the master sword dirty. it shouldn't run out of batteries!!

re: the sword pantry (great way to think of it), i always filled it with my favorite weapons and then never used any of them because I didn't want them to break. i love having those big leafs, so funny to just fan people away.

Thank you for sharing! I agree with most of these points, but me and bruno's point of disagreement lie with his concept of worthwhile loot. I don't think "shit sword I'm priced into using to keep high durability on my Good sword" is worthwhile loot.

However, I see its applicability in the early game experience, and it is known game designers love that part the most. Still maintain that higher durability on at least some items would be nice, though.

PS: Not a fan of the "if you loved BotW, you loved it because of weapon durability." line. 😑

The truth is, I can't comment because I have never played Breath of the Wild. I remember hearing about it before it came out, thinking "finally, a Zelda game that will break out of the mold", but I don't have a Switch, so that's that. Once I get enough money I'll get one for sure.
