Sleep: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
It’s a sunny day and my cat is on me and rumbling. It is already a good day.
Yesterday I read Miguel Unamuno’s1 Fedra, and it was inspiring! Because it was so fucking bad there’s no way I could ever write a worse version! It has the sensibility of those cash-grab direct-to-video knock-off movies and dialogue worse than Logjammin’. The one interesting thing it does is basically turn Theseus (“Pedro” in this Catholicized version) into an ineffectual, repressed homosexual, which is not unsupported by the mythological Theseus’ “friendship” with Pirithous, HOWEVER I’m not convinced that the author did it on purpose 2. Phaedra being unwilling beard is a nice inversion of the traditional infidelity she is subject to, but the play completely squanders this opportunity because it is itself as repressed as its characters. All we get is the sense that a much more interesting play is happening offscreen (off stage?).
I also had a really good sandwich…
1: a dumb third rate, fascist “public intellectual” who was reportedly despised by his contemporaries because he wouldn’t shut the fuck up and from what I can tell, had major Jordan Peterson kind of delusional vibes.
2: he did make one change from the manuscript to the final edition that implies he might have done it on purpose.
