and then i learned that both previous candidates for largest organism were fungal colonies that spanned up to thousands of acres

Idk about Dracaena trees, but fun fact about palm wood: because palm trees are monocots, their wood does not have growth rings. In fact, do you know what it looks like? Bamboo!

This isn’t at all related to your main point but that Wikipedia article is badly in need of copyediting, wow. Commas and periods all over the place, occasional nonsense sentences… Don’t normally see that on an article on a topic that I’ve actually heard about.
