BOTY: House of Psychotic Women

An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films

Part memoir part critical horror film anthology, this was the book I enjoyed reading the most and the book I was saddest to finish. It's exactly what the subtitle says it is. I read it too fast accidentally because I thought it was much longer than it actually was, but I felt extremely at home at the House of Psychotic Women and it was an absolute banger to end the year on. I don't even watch Horror or Exploitation movies! But Kier-la's magnetic prose had me HOOKED the whole way through with alternating insights into these obscure films and her vulnerable, relatable storytelling.

MUST READ if you're a woman and sanity is hard to hold on to.

Runner Up: The Dawn of Everything

A New History of Humanity

Even while dead, Graeber (and Wendrow) managed to put out a remarkable re-examination of the Enlightenment and how Indigenous critiques of the West molded it and its resulting counter-movements. Extremely good.

Sequential Art Category: My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness

A popular autobiographical manga that was surprisingly heartfelt, with very cute art! Definitely recommend.

💩 Worst Book of the Year Award 💩: The Paranoid Style in American Politics and Other Essays

Written by an absolute dumbass, the titular essay is fine, if milquetoast, meandering and confused but maybe it was alright in the 60s? At one point he recognizes that he's competing again the absolute classic The Authoritarian Personality and acknowledges a lot of what he's saying is an insipid summary of much better scholarship. The rest of the essays are absolute dogshit and I honestly can't believe this guy is a respected historian ? The bar was set SO low for this guy.
