Hilo, HI universally uses low-pressure sodium street lamps everywhere to reduce light pollution for the observatory up on the volcano.
Some places near the observatories in Arizona also have done that also. I have no idea why a section of I think it was Greenfield, Wisconsin, in the Milwaukee area did. I'm sure they're long gone by now though.
My understanding is that LPS bulbs have not been manufactured since 2019, but single spectrum LEDs are fairly available
I looked into it, and it looks like LED conversion projects have been going on in the state since like 2012. I'm getting mixed messages about whether the Big Island has switched over or not. If they are LEDs, they must be indistinguishable from the solid-yellow sodium lights because I'm seeing people talk about it on Reddit as recently as a month ago.
Thanks for the correction! It's a fun fact I like telling people about, so I want to make sure I'm not spreading misinformation :).
Artificial lighting is one of my autistic special interests so I am happy :)
