Reading about Nex Benedict, the teenager in Oklahoma who was targeted by bullies and beaten to death for being non binary. It's fucking destroying me. What was the point behind the breaking of the gender binary, of the the entire idea of fluidity, if we cannot even protect kids from this? I feel like a naive idiot. Just inventing new language in which smear the queer can be applied to. All this and for what, a decade of TD Bank ads before getting run out of entire states for being beautiful and unique and vital? The interview with the parents destroys me. They were trying, they were actually trying, which is so much more then most people get, and in the end it means zip because the world has determined we are allowed to have a target on our backs. Meanwhile the only protections we can offer is "try to survive this." Best case scenario, this murder is grisly enough that it might make somebody have to give an apology for letting it happen. More likely, somebody will build a career off of it. Makes me sick to my stomach. Never has the promise of an all queer future felt so impotent. Donate to their GoFundMe to make sure their coffin gets more dignity then they ever were allowed to have. We're watching them blow up stars and acting like the sun isn't next.

I don't even want to dwell on it but I just can't not. I know bullying never stopped, but seeing this on top of the state sanctioned actions and online hate mobs that are allowing this environment to thrive is just hurting my heart.

Naturally, it is only human. Nobody can stare at misery all day, and what we post is just one facet of our experience. It's important to allow people grace. Still, it is hard to not feel like, collectively, there is more that we can do. And without pointing fingers, or suggesting that there is any individual actor involved, I think that we can default to a kind of transparency in the face of horror (myself included), and as the waters grow more choppy I don't know if I think that is the best course of action anymore.
