i was gonna share some advice and figured i could make it a post, that way more people can benefit from it! (note: i am not a professional, these are just things that help me personally)

so, self care, huh. it can be quite the challenge to some people, especially when dealing with mental illness,, here i'll list random things that have helped things be a little less difficult and maybe even more fun for me! hopefully others may find it useful as well ^^

🚿hygiene🪥

hygiene is the part i struggle with the most. taking showers is such a chore and brushing teeth is sensory hell, so here's ways i've found to work around it

🫧showering daily can be too much sometimes, so it's ok to settle for every other day or even every 2 days or so! make a schedule that feels comfortable for you, maybe add an alarm on ur phone if u have a hard time remembering to do it

🫧take bubble baths or get bath bombs! they make it a bit more fun and relaxing, which can make all the difference!

🫧if ur like me and struggle with teeth brushing because of sensory things, i recommend finding a very soft toothbrush and flavorless toothpaste! or u can get those fun flavored toothpastes, usually the kids ones are good!


🍽️food🧃

sometimes u dont have energy to make food, or just don't feel like it, or maybe ur so tired u can't even tell if ur hungry or not! what to do?

🍴safe foods. they're the most important thing in my experience; something u dont get tired of, with a familiar and comforting taste. for me it's waffles, i know for a lot of people its noodles, but it can be just about anything! whatever ur safe food is, try to always have it around

🍴cooking isnt easy, and often takes time. buying frozen things has also helped me a lot, just gotta heat it up and its done! ordering food is also a good option; anything fast and easy is great when u dont have much energy

🍴remember, eating badly is better than not eating at all!


🏠environment🌇

when ur depressed, u often lose energy and motivation to go anywhere. everyone says going outside helps, but sometimes u just can't, so it's good to make ur environment as nice as possible, since thats where u will be staying for a while

🛏️i understand it can be hard to get out of bed, so might as well make it extra comfy! soft blankets, extra pillows, and plushies can make it a bit more pleasant to stay in bed

🛏️if u have the energy, try decorating ur room a bit! fun posters, nice decorations, etc! when the place looks nice, it feels less like a metaphorical prison 

🛏️lights!!! being in the dark for too long tends to make the bad vibes worse, so lights can really help! the color of it also makes a huge difference! i find yellow lights help me the most (also good for seasonal depression! warm colors in a cold winter is always nice). i personally like lamps over the actual room light; they're a bit more dim which is useful if ur sensitive to brightness


🎮interests📖

it can be hard to have fun when ur out of motivation for anything, but it's really important to bring any source of joy into ur life, especially when ur struggling!

📺reading is a great low effort activity, and if getting to know a whole new story seems like too much, theres always fanfics! theyre very good if u want a shorter read with already familiar characters

📺watching stuff is also a good way to spend time; can be a movie u find interesting, a fun show, or a youtuber u like! the options are endless! also music, i very recommend music

📺everyone says u should talk to people when ur struggling, but venting may not always help; sometimes u just need to stop thinking about whatevers bothering u. often times when im overwhelmed or panicking, i ask someone if i can infodump about something i like, and it genuinely helps so much! i'll go on and on about something that makes me happy, and it always helps me calm down


👕self image🪞

liking urself and the way u look isnt always easy; in fact, its probably one of the hardest things to do in this list! but it isnt impossible

👓play dress up! u dont need some fancy event to dress nice; even if ur not going outside, put on ur best outfit! style ur hair in fun ways, wear accessories, look cool for urself! 

👓ok this is gonna sound like a joke but im for real; make a fursona. sometimes u have issues with ur apperance that u cant really change right now, so making a character that's an ideal version of urself and saying "this is me" is genuinely so helpful.

👓or alternatively, if u dont wanna think about ur apperance at all, thats also fine! for a long time my own reflection was too upsetting, so covering up the mirror in my room helped forget about that



of course not all these tips will work for everyone, and other people may have better advice, again this is just based on my personal experience. to anyone out there struggling, just know im very proud of u for making it this far, and i really hope things get better for u soon <3
