This is Cosmic. It's a full rewrite of Retro Engine v3, the engine powering the 2011 remake of Sonic the Hedgehog CD (and the predecessor to the engines that would run the remakes of Sonic 1 and 2, as well as Sonic Mania), as well as the version of the game featured in Sonic Origins. The entire codebase has been moved from C++ to C#, which guarantees consistent runtime behavior across all platforms. (Current work is on finishing the desktop version for Windows/macOS/Linux, work on the mobile versions will come after.) All expected behavior from the original engine is present, all changes presented by others' decompilation work have been refactored, and brand new features and changes are set to turn an engine tuned for a single game into a more general-purpose game development platform accessible for modders and from-scratch game developers alike. I don't have a source code release date set in stone yet, but it will likely be by the end of the year. Significant progress will be shared periodically in the #cosmic engine tag!

Pictured in these screenshots is the Sonic CD remake, with data slightly modified to work with Cosmic. Please note that while the engine has mainly been tested with this game, it is not designed expressly for it. Cosmic is adjacent to the Retro Engine decompilations, but aims to be something that can stand on its own. One of the engine's main goals is to offer a way for new games to be created using a similar interface to Retro Engine, so expect more unique things to be shown off eventually!

Read below for a rundown on what the engine offers right now, and what it promises for the future.
