Why do you use the linux distro that you do?
Just kinda woke up in the mood to hear about how people chose their distros today. Mostly interested in desktop use more than servers, unless you feel like your story there is particularly interesting. I assume some desktop choices will also just be "it's the first thing I tried and it works".
Back in high school, I got to see one of the network backbone systems running, and it was Red Hat Linux with KDE. I was all ๐๐ฆ and proceeded to do my research on it. I eventually got a boxed copy of Red Hat and replaced Windows on my computer, and loved it! When it came time to upgrade, Fedora Core replaced Red Hat, and I got a copy via the "For Dummies" book (it had the DVD with the book!) to install.
I did try a little distro hopping, but not much as I didn't have very good Internet back then. (56k! Big oof.) I gave the very first stable release of Ubuntu a try when it first came out, and oh my god it was terribad to use! It was the flakiest piece of crap I had ever run, worse than Windows ME, as trying to do anything made the system shudder and crap itself. I'm still amazed that people swear by it.
Fedora is basically my comfort distro, so that's why I stick with it. That, and the fact that a good friend of mine is one of the members of FESCo...
