literally the first thing i see after booting is game pass ads on my lock screen. i'm getting ads before i've even logged in. on a paid copy of 10 pro no fucking less.

"i turned off the lock screen" cool so every time i start my computer i'll simply disable another windows feature because microsoft decided it needed to have ads or bing or copilot bolted onto it now. got it 👍

it pisses me the absolute fuck off that there is basically nothing we use in our everyday lives that is not either choked with ads or emblazoned with corporate logos. i stopped watching TV largely to get away from the incessant advertising, and the fact that my operating system is trying to take its place is giving me extremely violent thoughts

i mostly just skip it... they're small enough so i don't really pay attention to them. i like it when they give cool facts about whatever picture shows up on the lock screen though, it makes it worth it for me....

I think there is a class of system administrator that knows how to turn this kind of thing off at the network level and universities and the like have lucked in to keeping them around - for now

in reply to @clip's post:

don't have a choice in this bitch of a world, all the software i work with doesn't have Linux versions, MacOS is prohibitively expensive and an entirely new ecosystem to me and I lack the computer prowess to do any of the difficult stuff that either lets me use MacOS on any other device or lets me get rid of the ads.

the very first thing i see when i wake up is ads pervading every square inch of my entire world. i ain't pretend i can opt out of what i can't opt out of. the evil machine won. if i could just go "nah, actually it didn't" then we wouldn't be so mad all the time

i'm like THIS close to switching to linux and not looking back but the effort of moving all my important files, etc, is still blocking. it only takes one more drop and i'll absolutely do it lol

also i draw on Clip Studio and it has no linux version, even wine doesn't work.

ALSO i hear SteamVR is muuuuuuuuuch worse on linux (strangely)

  1. when I switched, I got a new M.2 SSD for a boot drive, and left my existing disks alone. Linux has genuinely good NTFS support now, and I mount them automatically on boot. I even symlinked my Windows user directory to my WINE profile, so p.much all my old Windows stuff just works like it did with my Win10 install
  2. yeah it is really terrible that Clip Studio doesn't play nice with WINE. I know it's not the same but have you given Krita a try? It's on Windows as well.
  3. and I think I know why [Glares banefully at GNOME]

The very first thing I do when I set up a new win10/11 machine is pop up PC Settings, search for the word suggest, then uncheck every setting that comes up from that search. Then I search for welcome and uncheck all of those too.

I do not need Windows telling me what all Windows is capable of. It is capable of too much and this is how I limit its power.
