watching someone play the special stages was what pushed me over the edge into actually wanting to bother learning this game, and i'm quite disillusioned with 1. knowing that the cool part of the game is intentionally gatekept and 2. the idea of having to deal with the inevitable "but what about the people without the wrist hurt disease who already unlocked things in hard mode, haven't you thought about their feelings" and i am simply too tired for another lap on mr. bones' wild ride

There were a few games back in the day (Panic on Funkotron and one of the Tiny Toons games comes to mind) that intentionally truncated the game when you played it on easy mode. They were like "Well that's it for easy mode. Now go back and play it on normal for the actual game!" It annoyed me as a kid and it annoys me now. I wanted less of a challenge, not less of a game.

sonic frontiers even did this shit - abruptly skipping a final-final boss (and lore dump) unless you were on hard mode for the final titan fight. at least there you could bump the difficulty setting up right at the end and still play the rest of the game as normal

It's pretty wild to lock the special stages behind the difficulty, especially strange since in 2.2 they renamed the difficulties to encourage players to adjust to lower difficulties if needed. I take that as a sign this may change though :)

Also annoys me a bit that cpu difficulty is tied up in the kart speed. I wouldn't mind lower cpu difficulty sometimes but gear 1 is unsatisfying slow to me. Anyway I thumbs up'd the issue thanks for bringing that up!

(edit: Now that I think about it I wonder how viable the special stages are in gear1 as-is. I know there are sections where you need some speed to progress and I've failed in gear 2 to make some jumps unless I used rings or boosted)

sorta, but more sophisticated and not accidental. the game just requires a decent amount of APM and has demanding score requirements for letting you do the neat emerald-chasing special stages that gate unlock progress past a certain point.

You're not the only one, I'm not playing it because of all this stuff like lifning's posts that I'm hearing about on other parts of the Internet. Sounds like something that would just frustrate me to no end.
