i don't understand the value proposition of magic the gathering any more. spend a dollar each on cards with the hulk or gordon ramsay on them and have the most text you've ever seen. or you can play our convenient digital version where you can pay real money to get pictures of those cards. or you can get into the secondary market which is just NFTs but it's paper so everyone takes it very seriously because somehow we've bought into the idea that the tokens used to play this physical game have to be authentic products™ or it doesn't count

It's official tournament play you see. Like can you imagine a poker tournament where they used cards not printed by Poker Incorporated? It would be a disaster. That four of diamonds could've come from anywhere

proxy bans are really funny because if the community wanted to, they could tell them to fuck off. but the reality is many of these communities desperately want the financial & non-financial support of the manufacturer for their tournaments and events

proxies are a thing for tabletop minis too apparently

yeah I don't get it either. it's fun to play like casually with friends where you're just using whatever deck someone had around and splitting it randomly

but the competitive level is pay-to-win (or, at least, pay to stand a chance of winning) except people still talk about it like it's chess

and it's not even pay the company who makes the game to win, it's pay some fuckin speculator asshole who bought 5000 booster boxes in order to gouge you

meanwhile most of the conversation about the game is about tournament play, as if Just Playing The Game were a kind of offhand nonserious thing. utterly bizarre

FWIW holding on to pieces of paper because you expect them to have value to other people is the value proposition of money.

I don’t mention this to give card collecting any undue esteem. I mention it because sometimes it’s worth remembering that money is fake, and I think people who use money for speculation (i.e. instead of using it to buy things or pay their bills) are weird too.

good idea. except having to sleeve 108 cards to play rummy, but they are getting worn out and an eight of clubs is missing.

i could just print my own then and sleeve it.

but won’t that make the deck stupidly thick?
