the first three calls of duty have almost comically cheap looking box art that nonetheless effectively communicates the idea of "let's go on a great adventure to save the world" and then the moment they hit Modern Warfare it's "hey did you know that we haven't officially declared a war in eighty years despite our military being in active conflict that whole time. i just think that's interesting"

If I recall correctly, Infinity Ward always wanted to make a modern warfare game, but they or Activision said to do WWII first to play it safe in their minds.

Also wonder if them researching for CoD4 inspired World at War to have a much darker tone.

i'd have to go check this but: i feel like the game industry was positively unwilling to make a game about any war after WW2 (minus a couple of horrible vietnam games - are there any good 'nam games?) until like 2010 and then everybody just stood up and said "alright, salad days over" and began aggressively making games set in the middle east

There where modern war games released before CoD4, but almost all of them were either very generic, forgettable, and/or tone deaf (either not really showing the horrors of war or trying to be a hollywood movie.) Ghost Recon might be an exception, but I can't say for sure.
