Some butterflies in mario 64 can randomly turn into a 1-up mushroom or summon a fucking explosion upon you.
With how much this game's been dissected and reverse engineered I'd have imagined this was common knowledge by now but I only recently got reminded of it and wondered just how many people had actually seen this happen at all in their game or even knew was a thing in the first place.
As shown in the example, some butterflies spawn from a set location when you walk into it, and the butterflies will randomly turn into explosion orbs or a 1up mushroom upon contact, you can reproduce this exact instance in tiny huge land!
But there's other areas where these exist, the other two instances I recall are in the castle courtyard, somewhere to the right of the castle and in Tall Tall Mountain, up high on the little sand pit that limits your movement.
I'd also like to know if anyone has found these anywhere else by coincidence!

they're also in whomp's fortress, and that looks like it going by a quick search of the decomp
