Hey DS fans of cohost, a question for you:

It sounds like the DSi hacking scene has gotten pretty good these days, is that right? How is installing DS games on a modded DSi compared to playing them on a DS Lite with a flashcart? I'm wondering if it'd be more convenient to try that at some point, at least compared to flashcarts that sometimes get loose and freeze up.

Oh yes, it's pretty easy! Doesn't need anything fancy either. Read through the guide:

I think the big issue is that the cartridge data access rate is significantly higher, so loading stuff from an SD card is always going to be a little slower. Having used what I believe are basically the same loading tools on my 3DS, I didn't think the difference was too severe to make the convenience factor worse, but there's only so much you can do to make it faster. (The flash cart of course pre-loads all the data from the SD card to enable consistent data speeds.)
There is probably some DS game that streams off the cartridge at a high-enough rate that things might break, but nothing I've played (which includes a lot of high-profile titles, Pokemons and Marios and Sonics and Solatorobo) has been particularly problematic.

Actually, the biggest issue I had when I was playing my 3DS more often (mine needs several repairs, or even a complete replacement) was how long it took the interface for loading DS games to load.

It's just a matter of copying the rom to the SD card, then you hold a button while booting to launch into twilight menu and run it from there. So just about as easy as a flash cart. They play just fine IME

I recently bought a DSi with just this in mind, but the instructions still make dire warnings about possibly bricking the thing and I chickened out and bought a flashcart (which is working fine, for now)
