the op was a response to a discussion about making the cohost code open source, because as it is the source code is currently literally worthless to everyone involved.

from that discussion arose another post about only considering serious proposals that also respect privacy and other shit. so @invis (who had been primarily pushing for this) spent time finding responses to the claimed issues and trying to come up with something serious

and homie, this site's anonymous funder, took one look at the title and decided to shit on it and throw it in the garbage.

apparently the irony of a modest proposal being a commentary on "rich versus poor, havers vs have-nots" was lost on someone who can just choose to piss away hundreds of thousands of dollars on a failed enterprise and, when the users of that come asking "hey, this place was nice, can we maybe try to keep it going ourselves" they go "lmao get fucked".

if only we all had nigh-infinite money to piss away on nothing. if only we could all laugh and fuck over anyone who dared rely on what we built. lol. lmao.

cohost.

You know, you could just say that don't take anyone below your pay grade seriously, rather than just going out of your way to pick at words in order to be an asshat.

It's very obvious clearly what the post is about, and that it's serious, from a two to three second glance. So you're not really selling anyone on being more mature than a ten year old here.

winning the startup lottery doesn't exactly indicate or confer wisdom, just capital. and rich people, as ever, tend to be assholes for some strange unknowable reason.

my personal favorite aspect of this dynamic was that the site's source code was collateral for this venture -- in the event of its failure, funder wins the fabulous prize of a computer program that was just demonstrated to be something that loses you even more money if you run it. this site has sentimental value to folks but from a technical standpoint we can certainly do so much better than starting from trying to pay down their tech debt

They said something about how it was to prevent them from folding and trying to become a non profit or something??? Which is funny given how much of the sites life they claimed to be a non profit and/or not for profit anyway.

But basically it sounds like it was because there wasn't much else to ask for as collateral and to have some level of ownership/control over what they did, less because the source code is useful in any way.

I’m too stupid to weigh in on this but by far the most insulting element here is linking the wikipedia article for A Modest Proposal presumably out of concern no one would get the joke

And like, if you link it because you think people in the audience may not know the reference... then logically wouldn't you think that the reference itself may have been an accident from someone that didn't know?

(I mean, they did, but that's beside the point of it being a douche move on Emoji Dickhead's part)
