Thinking about how there was a company that tried to sell a commercial Wine fork (Windows software on Linux), and when that didn't work out they laid off all their staff and pivoted into real estate

For use only on NTSC Genesis Systems.

is that the product that had it's name become synonymous with "slapdash mac version that barely works"?
Yes!
It's funny, I was just reading about this a few days ago, 'cause I used their MacOS fork as another example for my "Finnish Cheetoes" post.
It is absolutely buckwild.
I saw this! I thought that was a really good longpost about a trend I've witnessed time and time again.
honestly when i was using cider (about 2013-15 in the form of shady prepackaged releases of dubious origin) it wasn't that bad, but admittedly the expectations for full priced software are a little different from a pirated game packaged up by some random forum person who's taken the time to lovingly tweak configurations.
Just an absolute dumpster fire of a company. I used to run a (awful!) website that encouraged Linux users to boycott WineX (later Cedega). They repeatedly abused the open source community, and made sure that native ports of games didnโt happen.
