it's a smooth muscle relaxant, or antispasmodic, and it's basically magical, particularly if your IBS having tends to involve cramps and abdominal pain.
i was really surprised to find out there isn't really any over the counter IBS medication in america, and instead, people end up on SSRIs, or sometimes even antibiotics. there is hyoscine butylbromide (buscopan), which is another antispasmodic, but it's prescription only in the usa
meanwhile, mebeverine doesn't even get a look in. then again, it's not got FDA approval, and probably never will. there's no patents, and no-one wants to pay the FDA unless they get a monopoly on the manufacture
anyway, the good news? both mebeverine and buscopan are available in generic forms in both canada and mexico, and as best I can tell, neither are restricted medications.
both of them are over the counter medications in most other countries. it's just always weird that things i can buy in a supermarket here are nigh on impossible to get over there.
