bad poster & mediocre photographer

a former flatmate once wished for "72 hr news", or news about what happened over 72 hours ago, but with enough time to actually get context and updates on the story

i know people are against popularity contests here, or trending topics, and i often feel strongly about shuffled timelines, but i do wonder if there's a big of wiggle room

like listing "here are all the posts older than 24hrs, that got shared a lot in their first 24hrs"

That sounds a bit like what I hated most of twitter though. First a hit tweet reached the people I knew, then their following. But on day 2/3 it got shoved into the feeds of random people and the quality of reactions tanked. Especially when the algorithm started to scrape the bottom of the barrel.

Here a post loses it's momentum after a day and then everything is normal again.

It might work here because things are balanced differently, but there is a fine line between having your post reach more people who could be interested in it and people who are not and shouldn't see it.

There are places where it would fit, like a digest of the most popular posts from the people you follow, or for tags. And I would find it useful there. It just has to be carefully engineered to protect the poster.

I guess the most frustrating thing about Twitter is the lack of a ripcord to opt out of the algorithmic feed and coast on organic interactions. Opt in, and opt out later would be very important to me.
