  • they/them

i've always been one of those "algorithm haters", i'm one of those "please show me the posts my friends made in the order they made them" people

the thing is, well, i've started to realise why other people like the algorithm—the short version? their friends suck. well, their friends suck at content. they aren't on bebo, livejournal, or myspace to catch up with local gossip, they're on the internet to find funny memes and distractions.

opens for you page i'm not here to make friends.

sometimes, people want things more like tiktok, or reddit. content farms/mills with the opportunity for drive by commenting. algorithms aren't just about driving up ad metrics, but they definitely isn't about making friends.

... and that's why threads.app sucks ass. i wanted a "social network" and all i got was this lousy content.

i used to think there were a lot more "chronological timeline" people than "shuffle timeline" people, and for people who talk to their friends online, i'm pretty sure that's still true. but for the sheer mass of people who just want to flick through the tv channels during an ad-break, the algorithm is king

i guess social networks are dead, now—dead like irc, dead like forums—in that they're still around, people still use them, but nothing big or new is going to happen, and they're never going to be a popular as they were

Greetings, fellow algorithm hater. Second to last paragraph reminds me of a conversation with a UX designer friend, about website popups: "Yeah, I hate them too. Unfortunately, the data overwhelmingly shows they work"
