i dunno why my brain latches on to the "N64 Soundfont Covers" so much. i found myself listening to the cover of casiopea's mint jams more than a few times.

it might be that they're often instrumental covers, and sure enough, i have a very big soft spot for music without lyrics, but yes, i like video game music, i like covers, i like covers of videogame music (ask me about louie zong's mario italo disco)

but, well, it's not the same fuzzy nostalgia of four channel eight bit sound doing weird things with pulse width modification, nor is it the sound of amiga tracker drum and bass in a playstation one demo disk—those things i crave, and a huge part of it is evoking happier memories

but super mario 64? i never really played it. sure enough i've heard the music through memes (like the 'smoke weed everyday" cover of bo-omb batlefield) or in the background to several speedruns, but there's nothing in my past that city pop covers on n64 instruments really evokes

it's more like listening to musak covers or library music
