I especially "like" those choices, because the original series has a bunch of times where Spock admits that, yeah, all this toxicity is mostly just cultural hegemony, Vulcans act pretty normal in private, and he's an extreme case because of his extremist father and everybody in his early life shaming him for his human heritage. And then writers who grew up on that somehow forgot every lesson that the show taught them, in favor of "what if every Vulcan was more extreme?" Add in 1990s ideas of race and gender, and...yikes.
