A critter on the internet

Avatar by Sol

A techie critter and casual streamer in their mid-twenties with interests in webhosting. Known for running web servers on things that shouldn't run web servers, turning others into similar looking blue raccoons, and being a little bit bigger than average.

I post non-lewd kink, but make best efforts to tag it 18+. This might not always happen, however (especially if it's only adjacent to it.) Please only follow if you are 18+.

Additionally, please put something in your profile before following me. I probably won’t block over it or anything, but I get a little anxious when I’m followed by an empty account.

I just opened my Google drive and was like "why are these files all over the place? Why aren't these folders nested any more?" and after a moment clicking around I realized that Google Drive has instituted an algorithmic view of my stuff. Not "here's your files where you left them" but "here's some files we think you might like!"

Is nothing sacred

Based on "Business Documents July 2023", we think you'll love "Business Documents February 2019" and "Financial Documents May 2016"! We're definitely sure you're in Drive to consume Content and not just store your important files

in reply to @johnnemann's post:

That doesn't even make sense for the usual bullshit reasons associated with algorithmic sorting! "Engagement" is irrelevant with regard to one's own files! This is pure cult behaviour where folks believe the algorithm can never fail, it can only be failed.

  • "Hey, our users are telling us to go fuck ourselves for ruining another thing."
  • "Maybe we should listen to their feedback and give them what they want?"
  • "You're right, let's incorporate algorithms and AI into everything, then charge more."

Can't hit performance review requirements (cascaded down the management hierarchy) to integrate generative AI into everything if you don't integrate generative AI into everything.

I know you probably already found it, but just in case, the folder view is still there under "My Drive" on the left, and you can change the default landing page in the settings. I agree this is dumb, but it's just as dumb when Windows and MacOS do it. Google isn't breaking new ground with this particular feature.
